Abstract: Stope roof is assumed to be a beam simply supported at each end. Formula for calculating the maximum allowable roof span is deduced. Pillar spans are determined on this basis, and a new method for designing pillars is brought forward. It is proved that the pillar design method is convenient and desirable for use in mines having horizontal or inclined and stiff deposit, and risks of caving-in can in this way effectively be prevented.
